![]() ![]() ![]() Heavy Battlestar: example Nightstalker-Class Heavy Battlestar the Heavy designation from what I can tell from multiple fan designs seems to be a broad category of essentially battlestars built around the heavy/fleet carrier roles with lots of guns. So I am going to spitball this based on observation mostly fan designs.īattlestars obviously are the standard Battleship/Carrier style capital ship that a BS Group is formed around. What is the difference between a Battlestar, Heavy Battlestar, Warstar etc? if you enlarged it to create a heavy/fleet carrier, you could easily make it the centre of a carrier battlegroup rather than a Battlestar.Īnyways let me know what you think! also any ideas on how to classify the bizarre types of Cylon Ships? the Basestars in particular are oddballs that do not seem to easily fit any standard ship classification, mostly they just jump capable weapon platforms and airbases.Įdit: the Different types/roles/classifications of true battlestars deploy it and then stay out of the way at the back of the field. it is also a fast scout/pack hunter so once again filling the roles of a destroyer quite nicely.Īs for Carriers in the colonial fleet, the two obvious ones are the Berzerk-Class which is more like a hybrid gunstar/light carrier, and the Atlas-Class which is clearly intended to simply bring a large airwing to the fleet. Its primary armament in fact it's' missiles so it actually lines up quite well with the classic conventions of what a destroyer is. The Manticore, on the other hand, seems to fit the classic "Glass-Cannon" role of a destroyer, it has no auxiliary craft aside from maybe a shuttle or two that we never see. Also they are clearly not intended to operate on their own or for extended periods, so that makes it a short-range small escort and patrol ship, so Frigate seems to fit best. Other ships like the Adamant-Class Frigate, I am not so sure about because the cross over too many separate roles to be easily classified, but in terms of size relative to the rest of the fleet it makes sense. The Herekles-class in Deadlock is also classified as a Destroyer, which makes sense as is literally just tons of guns, no subtlety at all. This makes them Destroyers or even frigates in my book. Gunstars like the Fan-Made Cygnus are the in-universe catch-all term of smaller warships that have plenty of guns but no or limited ability to carry strike craft. that is clearly intended to act as a forward screen for the larger fleet. I would also argue the Orion-Class "pocket Battlestar" from Blood & Chrome fills the role of a light cruiser quite well, because it is a small-fast long-range scout ship. For some reason, the Loki-Class is also classified as a heavy cruiser in Blood & Chrome, despite the fact it is clearly a Fleet Tender/Ressuply ship. The Ranger-Class from Deadlock is classed as a Missile Cruiser so that is Cannon. I think this Fanmade Battlestar Warlock fits the role of Heavy Cruiser quite well because it is an enlarged and more capable Valkyrie. The Valkyrie falls into the Light or medium Cruiser category, it has solid firepower but is a lightly armoured support ship designed to operate together with heavier ships or as part of a wolfpack. Various Cruisers: Heavy, Medium and Light. i would say the Fan-Made Couger-Class fits this role. though there are ships that also specialize in one role or the other like the Atlas-Class Carrier.īattlecruisers: Always the odd capital ship class in most fleets, roughly the same tonnage as battleships but focused much more on speed then armour or even firepower. they also fulfil the command role of a Battleship/Carrier in a modern fleet. I would like to talk about how the Colonial and Cylon fleets classify each type or role of a military ship.īattlestars are clearly the Battleship/Carrier analogue: The Jupiter and Mercury both clearly fall into the role of Mainline Capital warship, the form the centre of a Battlestar Group, and are the largest most heavily armed and armoured ships in the group. >!Battlestar Galactica!
